After two straight wins in an otherwise horrific season, the Demons resumed normal service, thrashed by a finals contender. Even if other experienced players were dropping like flies, the injury-hit Dogs could still count on full-forward Simon Beasley, who kicked nine goals. The home side had 6.5 on the board before Melbourne's first score came 22 minutes into the first quarter with a Robert Flower goal.
Garry Lyon was the Demons' only shining light, following up his seven goal haul against Geelong with another strong performance. He was moved into the centre in the second quarter and helped spark a comeback that got Melbourne within 21 points in the third quarter. Two late Footscray goals extended the gap to 31, and three more early in the last quarter finished the game.
Best were Lyon, Healy and Stretch. Johnson had a bruised shoulder, Battiston a bruised shit and Wilson a bruised ankle.
