The Demons had a hot start, with the returning Jack Viney kicking a goal in the first 10 seconds, but were three goals down midway through the second quarter. They recovered with a burst of three quick goals before half time, taking a four point lead into the break. A late Bayley Fritsch goal in the third quarter extended the margin to 15 points, before two quick goals early in the last made sure of Melbourne's second win to start the season.
Best were Oliver, Salem and Pickett. Oskar Baker was unused medical substitute.
