Despite a tram strike and heavy rain which made getting to the ground and watching the game in comfort difficult, 21,000 spectators ventured to Princes Park to see Melbourne upset the 1945 premiers.
Carlton unfurled their premiership pennant before the match and were raging favourites. They took a lead into quarter time but a disappointing third quarter put them behind, and they were unable to make up ground in the last quarter and saw their ten game winning streak come to an end.
The Blues did hit the lead in the last quarter after kicking three straight goals to put themselves one point in front, but Melbourne steadied and won narrowly. In the tense last moments a Carlton player kicked what looked like a goal, but because the field umpire had already blown a free kick it was not paid.
Shortly after the disallowed goal, a goal umpire was attacked by a group of spectators who jumped the fence during the last quarter, knocking him to the ground and kicking him. After several minutes where police were unable to stop the attack, trainers were forced to intervene.
Dowsing, Smith and Stabb were best.
