Melbourne's Docklands nightmare continued, running into the in-form Bulldogs and being thrashed. The Dogs jumped them and opened up a match-winning lead at quarter time, extending the score to 76-2 before the Demons got their first goal.

With the margin still 73 points at half time, the game then turned on its head. Melbourne kept the Bulldogs goalless in the third quarter while kicking five of their own. Despite this they had left far too much of a margin to overcome, and even with the margin cut to 42 at the long break they were still left with nothing more than a minor chance of snatching victory.

It was not to be, the Bulldogs turned the tables on Melbourne again and kicked 10 goals to one in a last quarter avalanche which almost saw the margin climb over 100 points.

It was the highest score in the history of VFL/AFL football for a team who had been held goalless in one quarter.

Best were Viney, Cross and McDonald.

Jack Grimes replaced Neville Jetta at half-time after Jetta suffered a neck injury.
