Rover recruited to South from the St Kilda Thirds. He played ten games over three seasons for the Swans from 1938 before moving to Richmond midway through 1940 where he added another 19 games to his total.

Missed five league seasons serving in the army during World War II before returning to the league with Melbourne in 1946 where he played six further games. In the interim he'd played 10 games with South Sydney while stationed in New South Wales.

In 1947 he went to Coburg for two seasons, then Cobram in 1949 and Whitton from 1950 to 1952. Returning to the Sydney competition in 1953 he was with Western Suburbs that year and 1955, Bankstown 1959 to 1962, and South Districts 1966 to 1969.
