With Melbourne's season already over and one win since Round 5 they were largely abandoned by spectators. Those who did turn up on a bleak day with wind and rain saw them on the back foot from the first bounce with yet another scoreless quarter - this time the first after three scoreless fourth quarters through the season.
They had some excuses in both Dunbar brothers, both Wilson brothers, Wittman, Streeter and Donaldson all being absent, amongst eight changes but despite the relatively close finish they were by far the second best team all day until the visitors shut up shop in the last and allowed them to make a respectable result.
With the wind behind them Geelong scored five goals, but they might have had a number more if it wasn't for the strong defensive work of the Thomas, Chadwick, Corbett and Coy in the backline. Four of their five goals came in a five minute burst during the middle of the quarter which practically won them the game.
Geelong's defenders did similar strong work in the second quarter, but the difference was that despite holding their opponents goalless Melbourne were restricted to a single goal themselves, late in the quarter to Elliman. Corbett had been moved into a second rover position, but with the majority of the players following the ball around and crowding it there was little open play for his side to have chances on goal. Elliman finally got their first of the day late in the second half of his last game, shortly after missing an easy opportunity.
In the third quarter the game became rougher, with Chadwick receiving three free kicks in a row after being charged by Geelong forwards. Heavy bumping continued for a few minutes before the visitors kicked three goals to pull away. Haines managed Melbourne's second - the only one kicked against the wind all day - late in the quarter.
Congestion returned in the last quarter, with 16 players within 10 yards of the first bounce of the quarter, and when Melbourne got within 16 points Geelong took defensive measures - adding an extra man to the ruck and forcing the ball to the railway side wing whenever possible. Melbourne ran out of gas with five minutes to play and Geelong held on to win.
Thomas, Chadwick and Coy were best.
