After an encouraging performance in losing narrowly to Geelong a week earlier the Demons broke through for their first win of the season.

Their first game of the year at the MCG in Round 1 had been a debacle, but Melbourne showed much improved form. They were quick around the ground, both marking and kicking handily. On the other hand Hawthorn were weakened by illness and injury, and their defence was the only part of the side that came out of the match with credit.

After a relatively even first quarter Melbourne's clever handpassing and wing play saw them extend their advantage by half time, and in the third quarter Hawthorn launched a number of attacks on the opposition goal which were spoiled by poor forward play. Melbourne's lead at the last change would have been even greater if they hadn't lost their accuracy.

Two goals to Mueller early in the last quarter sealed the result and much of the spark left the game, with Melbourne going on to win comfortably.

Best were Les Jones, Mueller and Taylor. Sweeney was named 19th man and replaced Backway (knee) in the second quarter. Gillespie-Jones was a late withdrawal with a knee injury and was replaced by Longhurst. R. Fischer (knee), G. Jones (ankle) and Ball (bruised thigh) were also injured.
