Shock winners over the Bloods earlier in the year, the Redlegs fortunes had dipped considerably since and after leading at half time they were blown off the park. They were not helped by injuries - Bill Shelton, Alf Wilson and Percy Wilson were already out of the side, Stan Wittman was unavailable and Eric Donaldson was unable to play due to influenza.
South kicked with a slight wind in the first quarter but had the same number of scoring shots as Melbourne, taking a five point lead into the first change.
Just after the half time break, Taylor was injured and Corbett moved into his place. Edgar Dunbar and Percy Streeter also suffered leg injuries and the Reds finished the game with 15 men. Bert Chadwick was forced into the ruck in the second half, with Hugh Dunbar on the ball despite a weak ankle that had him in doubt before the game.
A slippery ball troubled both teams in the first half, but Chadwick declined an offer from the South captain to replace it. From there the home side handled it expertly while Melbourne struggled. Despite this the Demons had a nine point advantage at half time.
Yet another scoreless quarter, this time the third, saw them surrender the lead before conceding 6.6 to 1.1 in the final term. South's win came despite losing the first half ruck dual to Bobby Ewer and Hugh Dunbar and their midfield not playing at their best.
Despite the South onslaught the Redleg defence stopped them from kicking an even bigger score in the second term.
Coy, Streeter and Corbett were Melbourne's best.
It was the last game before three weeks off for the interstate carnival.
