Yet another game labelled 'match of the year' saw two top contenders to take on Essendon in the Grand Final clash, and it was Melbourne who came out on top. The Tigers stormed out of the blocks, kicking 4.2 to nothing to start the match before Melbourne struck back. Richmond still took a lead into quarter time, and despite falling behind at half-time they were within a couple of kicks all day before falling apart in the last quarter and being over-run.

After quarter time the Demons defence stood tall, with strong defence keeping Richmond to two points in the second term. After a period of scoreless play in the last quarter the teams traded goals, but Richmond's attack broke down continually. When challenged Melbourne had superior fitness and the talls won the aerial battle on the day easily.

Best were Don Cordner, McMahon and Collins. Cordner had been down on his form and injured all season but unleashed his best performance on the Tigers. It was he who put the brakes on Richmond's rampage in the first quarter and he was dominant in the air for the rest of the afternoon.

Woods was replaced by O'Toole in the third quarter when he suffered an ankle injury. Love replaced Johnston in the final quarter. Noel McMahen lost a tooth.
