A Thirds player from 1947 and Seconds player in 1948, Thomson made the senior side the next year. Prahran requested permission to interview Thomson before 1950 but he remained at Melbourne. The utility who could play in the ruck, the backline or at centre half-forward had his most successful seasons in 1950 and 1951 when he kicked 29 goals from 31 starts.
In 1954 he joined Nhill as playing coach.
