A seconds player in 1948, Thomson made the senior side the next year. The utility who could play in the ruck, the backline or at centre half-forward had his most successful seasons in 1950 and 1951 when he kicked 29 goals from 31 starts.

In 1954 he joined Nhill as playing coach.
