In their second game for the year under the ‘Narrm’ name, the Demons made up for their shock loss in Perth with a comfortable home victory. After conceding the first goal of the game, Melbourne kicked the entire 4.7 for the rest of the quarter. Led by captain Max Gawn, who had to pass a pre-match fitness test to play, they dominated everywhere but the scoreboard and saw the gap cut to 12 points at half time.
The game was won in 90 seconds of the third term when Jacob van Rooyen, Christian Petracca and Kade Chandler all goalled in quick succession. Even without Jake Lever, ably replaced by Adam Tomlinson in his first appearance since the opening game, Melbourne held the Saints to five goals in the first three quarters. They narrowly lost the final term after conceding four of the last five goals, but had the game well won by the the last change.
In the final term Steven May kicked his first goal since Round 15, 2020.
A win was the difference between ending the round fourth, and being outside the top eight for the first time since 2020.
Best were Gawn, Tomlinson, and Salem. Taj Woewodin replaced Harrison Petty (foot) at three quarter time.
