In the first game of the new season, the same forward woes that cost Melbourne in 2023 were on show again as they struggled to convert opportunities into goals. After one goal from seven scoring shots, kicked from a stoppage by Jack Viney, they were still 1.8 until Ed Langdon goalled after the half time siren.
Bayley Fritsch contributed three goals in the third term, as the visitors briefly took the lead. They started the last quarter two points down, and in humid conditions were unable to cope with opposition featuring ex-Demons Brodie Grundy and James Jordon.
The AFL billed the game as 'Opening Round', with Melbourne involved in another game in the official 'Round 1' a week later.
Best were May, Viney and McVee.
