At the unusual start time of 4.40pm on a weekday, Melbourne travelled to their first match for premiership point in Cairns and suffered a shock loss to the lowly Swans.
Kept to three goals in the first three quarters, they made a move early in the last quarter but missed opportunities by Max Gawn and Ed Langdon proved costly, with the Swans sweeping to the other end of the ground to kick the sealer after Langdon's miss.
Best were Gawn, Langdon and May.
