After playing a pre-season game in Alice Springs earlier in the year, Melbourne became the first side to host a premiership match at Traeger Park, the 44th venue for league football and the 32nd for the Demons since 1897.
Despite the lowest home and away crowd in 20 years the Demons received a significant financial injection to schedule a second match in the Northern Territory in addition to their traditional match in Darwin.
Port Adelaide were top of the ladder, with eight wins from nine matches, and despite Melbourne coming off a win before the bye the early stages showed why the Power were on top as they ran away to a 26-0 lead. Tow goals in a row to Melbourne cut the lead to 14 before a late Port goal restored a 20 point lead at quarter time.
Melbourne got the first of the second quarter through Cameron Pedersen, but Port then kicked two in a row to retake control. It wasn't until the 20 minute mark that the Demons made their move, kicking four of the last five goals to cut the margin to six at half time.
They then took a 10 point lead with the first three goals of the third quarter, and held Port to two rushed behinds for the first 20 minutes of the quarter. The 'visitors' took the lead back and went into the last quarter four points in front.
The Power looked uncharacteristically lethargic, and the Demons might have opened up a match winning lead if they hadn't missed four chances in a row at the start of the last quarter. As they began to tire Port took over, kicking four goals in a row from the 15 minute mark to eventually win comfortably.

Jimmy Toumpas replaced Aidan Riley in the selected side. He started as substitute and then replaced Max Gawn in the third quarter.
