In their first visit to a ground where they would play a game for premiership points later in the season, Melbourne suffered their first defeat of the year.
Despite an early goal to Jesse Hogan, Geelong got the jump on their opponents and were running away to a big quarter time lead before a late Melbourne goal brought the margin back under four straight kicks at quarter time.
The Demons rallied in the second, and despite limited opportunities on goal they were deadly accurate with seven straight - including two supergoals - which briefly game them the lead.
In the third quarter Geelong used the scoring end to their advantage to set up a match winning lead, and held firm long enough in the last to ensure that a late rally by the Demons wouldn't be enough. A supergoal was almost followed by another to Jack Fitzpatrick, and if his kicked hadn't rolled wide the margin would have been under a goal with a minute left.
Best were Trengove, Vince and Bail. Jesse Hogan suffered a back injury which ended his season.
