A big crowd turned out for the tribute to Tiger legend Tom Hafey who had passed away during the week, but Melbourne spoiled the celebrations with a hard fought victory.
After scoring just one goal in a tight, congested first quarter with a number of stoppages Melbourne booted three in the second and five in the third to take the lead into three quarter time. Their cause wasn't helped by the Tigers' abysmal kicking for goal - including 2.8 in the third quarter with many of the shots almost directly in front.
Richmond cut the gap to four points during the last quarter before Melbourne kicked away again. Jack Watts kicked two crucial goals, and when substitute Jay Kennedy Harris converted a kick from a tight angle on the boundary line the game was over and Melbourne had beaten their win total from 2013 in the first nine weeks of the season.
Best were Tyson, Pedersen and Howe. Chris Dawes was cited for striking Alex Rance in the first quarter and suspended for one match.
Jay Kennedy-Harris replaced Aidan Riley in the third quarter. Neville Jetta was a late withdrawal due to sickness and was replaced by Jimmy Toumpas.
