Carlton had won 14 consecutive games, so with Melbourne missing some of the players who had helped them to a big win a week earlier they were powerless to stop the Blues registering a 15th straight win.

Melbourne held their own at some points of a wet first half, but two goals early in the second term and as the game wore on the home side continued to improve and eventually took control.

Despite Carlton losing a player for the game at half time they remained unchallenged. When handling the ball became difficult they adapted better and started to kick off the ground while Melbourne were still trying and failing to pick the ball up.

During the third quarter Melbourne made the best of their opportunities to kick two goals but by the last quarter Carlton took control and won easily.

Best were Monk, Pearce and Mills.
