Richmond had beaten Melbourne in their inaugural VFL meeting on the first day of the season, but the Reds surprised them by paying the margin back in a dominant performance. Richmond were missing several of their best players, while Melbourne had a strong side and played accordingly.

On a wet day, Melbourne played the steadier football, and handled the ball as if the game were being played in dry conditions. Richmond only managed one goal for the day while Melbourne did it easily despite losing Hodgkins for a quarter while he recovered from a collision. The Reds got the first two goals, but it took them well into the first quarter before they booted two in a row.

Melbourne continued to press their advantage at the start of the second term, but were kept out by Richmond's defenders until Len Norman snapped the third major. Richmond got their only goal of the day, but Melbourne had six up by half time. They sides only had one each in the third term, but the home side piled on another four to nil in the last.

Best were Smith, H. Purse and J. Purse. Wally Sykes was reported for striking Richmond's Hill during the last quarter and suspended for two matches.

Notes
Newspaper reports suggest Sykes was suspended for three weeks but he played three weeks later.
