After six straight years of winning their opening round engagement the Demons finally suffered defeat at the hands of South. They had a difficult build up to the game, unable to select Esposito (flu), Johnson (strained wrist), Kinnear (bruised thigh), Earle (ankle injury and mumps), Jackson (twisted knee) and Rennie (sprained knee).
Melbourne had the first goal within 60 seconds to debutante Geoff McInnes, but in a ragged game they only preserved their lead because of South's erratic play. McInnes' goal was their last of the quarter, conceding three and wasting several opportunities late in the term. McInnes got another early in the second term, and Melbourne were much improved. Their pace advantage translated to 4.6 for the quarter, shaving three points off South's lead.
With the use of the breeze in the third term, two late goals cut the margin to just two points. Melbourne was within striking distance, but their continually failing forward line meant they weren't able to overcome the home team in the last term. Each side kicked one goal to open the quarter, before South pulled away to win with plenty to spare.
Best were Beames, Vine and Avery. Moodie was 19th man, and replaced Margitich in the last quarter.
Notes
Sporting Globe gives the crowd as 15,000
It's likely that McInnes goalled with his first kick in league football.
