Richardson was residentially tied to Geelong but never managed to make it past their Reserves. He then joined Soith Melbourne, playing four seasons from 1928. Known as a high mark but for having slight physique, he was dropped from their list in the 1932 pre-season.

After one game with Melbourne, against his old side in the opening round of 1932 he dropped out of the side. Richardson was cleared to St Kilda in June of that year but did not play a senior match with them.
