Had originally been tied to Geelong but never managed to make it past their reserves side and played four seasons with South Melbourne from 1928. Known as a high mark but for having slight physique, he was dropped from their list in the 1932 pre-season.

After one game with Melbourne, against his old side in the opening round of 1932 he dropped out of the side. Richardson was cleared to St Kilda in June of that year but did not play a senior match with them.
