Joined as a centre-half forward before switching into defence and making his debut in the last game of 1933.

After not being used for the entire 1934 season Harrison was allowed to cross to the VFA to join Oakleigh midway through 1935 on the condition that he would return when Melbourne required his services. He kicked 35 goals in 11 games, causing Oakleigh to initially refuse to clear him back to the Demons. He was not available from Melbourne's 1936 practice games due to his commitments with Oakleigh, who originally said they would defer discussions on his clearance until the end of the season. He was eventually allowed to rejoin Melbourne, playing two games before being cleared back to Oakleigh again in June 1936.

In mid-1938, North Melbourne tried to sign Harrison but Oakleigh refused to let him go and he chose not to leave the Association without a clearance and be disqualified. North had already arranged a clearance with Melbourne, and in 1939 was allowed to move to North, where he played the rest of his career.
