A long, disappointing season came to an end with Melbourne avoiding the wooden spoon after three great forwards engaged in a shootout.

It was a rare year where the Magpies were missing the top four, and with nothing on the line the two sides put together an entertainting three-way shootout. Ten goals from George Margitich were matched with ten at the other end from Pie spearhead Gordon Coventry. Bob Johnson also had 11 scoring shots in his last game but only managed 3.8.

The match was the only the second time in league history to that point where two players had both kicked ten goals, but Collingwood's win was built on having more multiple goalkickers than their opponents.

Despite the defeat Melbourne finished 10th and avoided the wooden spoon.
