The defender, who played as an amateur, was recruited after winning the VAFA C-Section Best and Fairest in 1968. He missed just two senior matches in his debut season, both through injury, before travelling to England in 1970 to undertake an advanced teacher's training course at Oxford University.

Hone played most of his only season on a half-back flank before moving to ruck-rover towards the end of the year.

After playing three first class cricket matches for Oxford University in 1970 Hone returned to Melbourne and trained with the squad in 1971 but didn't play a game after beginning the year injured.
