Esmond "Tommy" McConville was recommended to Melbourne by Percy Wilson but it took them two seasons to convince him to travel to the city and play for them. When they did lure him to the MCG they got a solid goalkicking rover/forward, who provided good service over three seasons.
He played for a VFL representative side against the Wimmera League in 1927.

Often listed as Esmond in contemporary reports. His four game ban likely came from a number of incidents including throwing a ball at a player.
