Cleared from Carlton during 1933 - where his father remained on the committee - McNamara debuted the next season. He remained with Melbourne as a wingman and half-forward (with a brief stint in the backline in his last season), until mid-1939 when he was dropped from the list moved to South Melbourne. Earlier in the season he'd been given permission to speak to Essendon.
He stayed there until the end of 1941, winning the league's Gardiner Medal for best and fairest player in the seconds competition while serving as South's captain coach. He remained Seconds coach through 1945.
