Recruited in September 1944 on the recommendation of Wally Lock who had played on him in a services match in New Guinea and conceded seven goals, Rule played as a centre half-back in his time at the Demons.
After 18 games in his debut season, Rule tore thigh muscles in a 1947 pre-season game and was initially ordered to retire. He returned for the last four games of the season, and 19 games in 1948, including both Grand Finals. Rule was sought by North Melbourne before the 1950 season but Melbourne refused them permission to interview him. He stayed with the side for the rest of the year before walking out in the Demons after coach Allan La Fontaine admitted to him that he believed a rumour Rule had been bribed and hadn't played at his best in the 1950 Semi Final.
Rule became captain-coach of Wodonga in 1951 and having lost none of his ability was approached by new coach Norm Smith to return to the Demons as captain in 1952. Rule was tempted for footballing reasons, but the prospect of a significant drop in pay was enough for him to regretfully turn the offer down. He remained there through 1953.
Rule later returned to the Demons and worked on the recruiting staff. He had first been signed by St Kilda, but Norm Smith convinced him to return to the Demons.
Join Mentone in 1959 and was their playing coach in 1961 and 1962, and non-playing coach in 1963.
