In a day of high drama during an otherwise ordinary match Mark Jackson was reported for striking Ron Andrews with a clenched fist to the face during the third quarter, claiming at the tribunal that he'd done it because he'd been struck in the testicles. Jackson had already had his nose broken in three places during the first quarter. He was banned for two matches.

The forward was lucky not to be sanctioned by the league for hurling a beer can which had been thrown at him back into the crowd, and giving the supporters a two-finger salute. He was however fined by the club. After the incident he pledged to reform, saying "there will be no more antics and carrying on. I will endeavor to be the best boy in the street for the stiff necks", but in July of the same year North Melbourne fans complained that he had made obscene gestures to them in a game at Arden Street.

Kelly O'Donnell fared even worse, suffering a depressed fracture of the cheekbone during the match. Adrian Battiston hurt his calf and Steven Icke suffered torn ankle ligaments.

The antics between the sides didn't end start and end with the three-cornered contest between Jackson/Andrews and the crowd. Shortly before the final siren Simon Madden and Peter Giles engaged in brawl which eventually ended up involving a Demon trainer.

Somewhere amongst all the chaos was a football match and after an encouraging run of performances Barassi admitted that his side were "due for a bad one" but labelled the tackling as "the worst I've ever seen".

Best were Healy, Wilson and Battiston. Flower (thigh) was replaced in the selected squad by Hutchison. During the game O'Donnell (fractured cheekbone), Battiston (calf) and Icke (ankle) all suffered injuries.
