The son of Laurie Icke, who played 57 games with North Melbourne, Steven followed his father to Arden Street and was quickly identified as a future talent. At 16-years-old he was added to a special junior squad that received private coaching from Ron Barassi. Three years later he was playing senior football, and by 1977 he was centre half-forward in North's premiership team. He played for Victoria twice, before reuniting with Ron Barassi after being sold to Melbourne along with teammates Alan Jarrott and Brian Wilson at the end of 1981. He had previously been the subject of a $75,000 bid by Collingwood during 1980.

A defender in his time at Melbourne, Icke battled knee injuries during his career. In Round 18, 1985 a serious knee injury required a full reconstruction. He missed 1986, then returned for two games in 1987 before retiring.

In 2006 Icke was List Manager with Fremantle before joining Carlton as Football Operations GM in 2007 and remained there through 2011.

Notes
Sporting Globe says Icke's father was at Melbourne in the 1952 pre-season, but it's believed this was a misprint that was intended for the North Melbourne section rather than Melbourne. There is no other evidence of him doing pre-season at Melbourne.

Name also spelt Stephen in some sources.
