Former Under 19s player who debuted in 1981 and played across four seasons. Troubled by a hand injury across his last two years at the club he had to wear a protective glove during games.
Melbourne agreed to let him join Hawthorn in the 1985 pre-season but had trouble getting the Hawks to pay for his clearance. He also signed with Moorabbin but didn’t play a game. Richmond made a last minute bid to sign him but he was insistent on going to Hawthorn. Struck down by injury upon joining the Hawks and confined to just one game in 1986. Ellingworth would be the last man to cross directly between the two clubs for 25 years until Cameron Bruce in 2011.
Coached Old Melburnians to a premiership in 1994, then returned to coach them in 2000.
