After five consecutive losses to start the season, Melbourne faced a team that had easily beaten them in several recent meetings. Their task was made harder by the late withdrawal of Steven May with a groin injury, replaced in the selected side by Blake Howes. Despite losing another key defender, with Jake Lever already on the sidelines, Simon Goodwin stuck with playing Harrison Petty forward and was rewarded with his side's highest score of the year.
A half-time score of 74 was equal to their best across four quarters for the year, dating back to Round 1, and though they only added four more goals in the second half it was enough to hold on and win. The lead peaked at 29 points when Kysaiah Pickett kicked his second second goal in a minute, early in the second quarter.
Two quick goals for the Dockers drew them to within one straight kick midway through the final term, before Harvey Langford gave his side breathing room. Four missed opportunities to seal the game drove the margin beyond what the visitors could catch, and a goal in the last minute came too late as Melbourne registered their first win of the year.
Substitute Harry Sharp replaced Daniel Turner (concussion) at half time. Blake Howes was a late replacement for Steven May (groin injury)
Best were Gawn, Pickett and Bowey. Kysaiah Pickett was fined $1875 for striking and Caleb Windsor $2000 for rough conduct.
