Coming off the bye Melbourne won their first game of the year under Percy Wilson with a thrilling victory on their home turf.
South had their chances to win, but lacking a forward who could get the job done throughout the match they fell short despite a third quarter where they rallied to take the lead after kick just 2.10 in the first half.
The two sides struggled through the last quarter, and South had a one point lead deep into the final term before two Melbourne behinds gave them the lead.
House, Lord, Bourke, Harker, Farrow, Tulloh and Coy were Melbourne's best.
