The Demons had beaten North Melbourne in Round 2, but were far from convincing in victory. The tide turned quickly with a comfortable victory over the disappointing Blues. Selectors reacted savagely to the disappointing start to the year by dropping Barrie Vagg, Herbie Matthews, Don Williams, David Robbie and Bob Miller. Williams and Vagg went back to the bench, the other three out of the side entirely. This made way for the returns of Tony Anderson, Neil Crompton and Brian Dixon after injury, as well as Graham Wise and debutante Graeme Watson. Every line was changed. Ex-Demon Tony Thiessen made his debut for Carlton.
It was a win achieved without much success from the forward line. Ron Barassi was seemingly the only potent option up front - both creating for others and kicking goals himself - while Barry Bourke, John Lord and Ray Groom were well held.
If Melbourne's forwards were struggling then Carlton's were abysmal. They managed just four goals for the day. They had their fair share of attacking thrusts but could only boot one goal in the first three quarters.
Best were Williams, Roet and Emselle. Anderson (broken nose) was replaced by Williams in the second quarter and Dixon (bruised shoulder) by Vagg in the last quarter. Barassi left the field late in the last term with cramp.
