Thiessen had a fast start to his senior career after crossing from Tasmania, but after his form fell away he only played seven games, and was dropped from the list before the 1964 season. He signed with Carlton and played one year before joining North Melbourne in early 1965. After four games he moved to VFA side Waverley, where he remained until 1971.
Thiessen's son James was a member of the 1998 Adelaide premiership side.
