A talented rover who followed his father Richie to the club and worked his way through the Under 19s. Emselle was on the bench in Melbourne's 1964 premiership side and a regular for the next three seasons before injuring his knee and missing all of 1968 before returning for two games in 1969.

Despite only playing two matches in his last year, Emselle won the award as best player in the Reserve Grade competition and captained the side to the premiership. He also captained the VFL Reserves in a match against New South Wales the same season.

He joined VFA club Prahran in 1970 where he was a two time Best and Fairest and a premiership captain in 1973. Played there through 1975.
