Recommended to the Demons by Premier Henry Bolte, Wise had a horror debut aganst Carl Ditterich, and played just three games in his first season. After dropping out of the senior side, Melbourne intended to play him in the Reserves but the Ballarat League wouldn't provide an extension on his initial three match permits unless he was picked for the seniors and Wise had to return to Ballarat.

Wise returned in 1964, and despite earning the wrath of Norm Smith for missing a practice game while fruit picking, he played most of the year as the side's only specialist ruckman, retaining his spot right through to the Grand Final.

After only playing one game in 1966, Wise retired and moved to Tasmania to play and coach. He had also been pursued by VFA side Waverley and a number of country clubs. He played in a premiership with Launceston and coached Golden Point in 1979.
