A week after snapping their six game losing streak with a win over last placed St Kilda normal serviced resumed at the MCG with Carlton handing out a thrashing. The 62 point win the week before was cancelled out by a loss of the same margin.
The previous Saturday St Kilda had kicked three goals in the first quarter and then not managed another one for the entire match, and seven days later it was Melbourne's turn to be on the end of the same sort of result - adding just six behinds after quarter time.
The lead they'd built up in the first term swiftly evaporated and the finals bound Blues ran away with an easy victory. The faster the game got the more Carlton took control, and Carlton kicked 11.13 in the last three quarters while Melbourne's forwards were poor.
Best were Matthews, Allan and Chadwick.
