Moved from South Melbourne to Richmond after one game and added another three before the First World War put a temporarily end to his career.

Cleared from Prahran to Melbourne before the 1919 season he played in the ruck for four years before being dropped from the list before 1923 and returning to South Melbourne.

In 1925 he joined Benalla as playing coach.

He son Norm also played for Melbourne and South, also Matthews son would win a Brownlow Medal for South Melbourne and his grandson Herbie later played for Melbourne.
