Born in Victoria but resident in Western Australia since he was a child, Robert Wallace 'Bruce' Campbell debuted with Subiaco in 1908. In 1911 he was convinced to throw in a promising WAFL career to cross to Victoria and join the Blues. Remarkably his first two games both ended in draws, and the third went close with the Blues suffering a two point loss.

He played just three games with Carlton in before joining Fitzroy midway through the year. Campbell topped the Maroons goalkicking that season, but suffered an interrupted 1912 and returned to Western Australia.

Back at Subiaco the high-marking forward played in the 1913 and 1915 premiership sides before football was interrupted by the First World War. He enlisted in the Army in August 1915 and went to war.

Now 30-years-old he returned for one season with Melbourne in 1920 and played five more games for the Fuschias.

Campbell later served as a Lieutenant in the Army's Home Defence Force during World War II.
