The 9th new player for the season debuted, but despite only going in behind at three-quarter time the Demons were run over in the last quarter to drop their third straight game of the year.

Melbourne's midfield dominated the game, but with Smeaton playing a near lone hand amongst the forwards he couldn't deliver victory single handedly. The two teams went in level at half time, but even with the aid of the wind in the third quarter the Demons couldn't capitalise and were left open to the visitors running away with the match easily.

Best were McKenzie, Jackson and Denis Cordner. Tom McLean replaced the injured Johnston in the last quarter.
