After six straight losses which had destroyed their hopes of playing in the finals, the Redlegs finally found a team they could beat - the bottom of the ladder Seasiders. They travelled to the Junction Oval on a fine day for football but found a heavy surface thanks to recent rain.

Coming off a shock win against Essendon the week before, St Kilda were on top early but after kicking 3.1 in the first quarter they managed just two more behinds for the whole match. They cost themselves any chance of victory with poor handballing, and were usually behind in the race for the ball.

Melbourne had the benefit of the bye the week before, and with fresh legs the visitors gradually eased away to a comfortable victory. It could have been an even more significant victory had they not kicked poorly in the final term.

Pace and superior marking were the difference, and they made better use of the ball by foot while St Kilda tried to handball their way out of trouble and only managed one point in the second half in the final minutes of the match.

Best were Corbett, Chadwick and Lilley.
