Both teams entered the game with weakened sides, North missing their captain/coach and Melbourne several players due to injury. Despite crowded play in the first quarter the two sides put on 11 goals between them, with North six points in front. As the game opened up in the second North used their superior long-kicking to increase the margin.

North entered the third quarter determined to take the match by force, and kicked three goals in a row before Melbourne responded. At one point during the term the umpire had to stop play to allow players to calm themselves before continuing. North took a 17 point lead into the last quarter, aided by Margitich hitting the post twice.

Any hope of a revival in the final term were thwarted as North eased away to a comfortable victory.

During the third quarter Ike Sellers suffered a broken leg in what would be his last VFL game and was replaced by McMahon. Kinnear sprained his ankle and Ogden received a cut above the eye.

Sellers was best on ground until his injury, followed by Adams and Usher.
