The prospect of Melbourne playing their first winless season since the beginning became even stronger with yet another loss in front of a tiny crowd at the MCG.
The Fuschias defended stoutly against the Blues during the first quarter, and even though they didn't manage a goal with a strong wind they had just one less scoring shot and only conceded three goals but in the second the visitors made no such mistakes and piled on 7.4 to 0.0 to take a stranglehold on the match.
Despite having several of the better players of their already badly overmatched team away, Melbourne improved in the second half and narrowly won it but the match was well and truly over when they went into half time 56 points down. One of the areas they were dominant in was the ruck, but Carlton were better in passing and playing to their position.
Best were Baquie, McKenzie and Boddington.
