Born Louis Charles Salvana, he was known as Lou when playing football and Charles when playing cricket.

After playing in six losses during the winless 1919 season, the forward turned his hand to cricket. In 1926/1927 he played a single Sheffield Shield match for Victoria against New South Wales at the SCG. He continued playing district cricket for Hawthorn-East Melbourne until the 1940s. In 1949 he was named coach of the North Melbourne cricket side and continued playing for their Second XI.
