Biggest loss at East Melbourne

A week after all but confirming that they would be the wooden spoon side by losing to fellow strugglers Geelong, Melbourne ended the first round of games with their biggest ever loss at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Three more league debutants and ex-Carlton player Hore were injected into the team but the result was the same as it had been against everybody else, a loss. This time more vicious than usual.

Even with a weakened side Essendon were far better and were rarely troubled. Melbourne played their best football in the first quarter, but still went into two goals behind. The home team kicked away from there, and if it wasn't for a strong performance by Gray in the Melbourne defence they would have enjoyed an even larger victory. Col Laidlaw kicked seven for the winners.

Gray, debutant Hore and Haines were best.
