Caused a controversy by joining Melbourne and playing before being granted a permit. The matter was sorted out, but despite showing form in his three matches he chose to return to the country at the end of 1919.

Returning to the VFL after playing with Mooroopna he appeared in six games over two seasons with Richmond from 1922 to 1923.

He later returned to Shepparton and won a premiership in 1927.
