Rover who initially travelled to Victoria in 1916 to play with Carlton. Even though Sturt were happy to clear him after one season, the South Australian league refused. He sat out two seasons before joining North Melbourne in 1918.

Known for his high stamina and ability to rove all day, he played 14 games in Melbourne's winless (1919)) season before returning to add six the next year.

Tonkin was cleared to VFA side Brighton before 1923 where he remained until 1925. In May 1928 he was cleared to the Canberra competition.
