A paltry crowd turned out to watch the league's two winless sides go to battle, and it was the visitors who went home with their first four points of the season despite missing several key players - including their captain and vice captain. Melbourne remained without a win since 1915, and would go on to finish three and a half games adrift of the Pivotonians at the bottom of the 1919 ladder.

In windy conditions the Geelong side with half a dozen youngsters handled the wet ball better than their opponents, but conceded the first two goals of the day to Tonkin into the wind. From there Melbourne scrambled while their opponents were superior in all aspects of the match.

The Reds led by two goals at quarter time but Geelong were soon back in front and led at every change from then. The visitors grabbed the lead early in the second term and never gave it back. Melbourne only scored a point in the second quarter and went into the half 22 points down. They rallied during the third quarter, cutting the margin back to 10 points at before rain fell in the last quarter and hampered the players considerably. Two goals with the wind soon made the result safe for Geelong.

Best were Allan and McKenzie. Little was promising on debut after having last played VFL football for University in 1915. Tonkin gave a promising display despite having arrived early in the afternoon after catching a train overnight from Sydney.
