The hapless Reds crashed to their sixth straight loss of the year at the hands of a rampant Carlton side who were inaccurate but made more of their chances than Essendon had a week earlier when they should have been the ones registering a huge win over the disappointing Melbourne.

In the most unfavourable weather of the season, with drizzling rain falling, Melbourne were thrashed by a Carlton side who had been criticised for their play early in the year. Their inaccuracy in the first three quarters was made up for with a 6.3 to 0.5 last quarter which helped register a huge win to get the Blues' season back on track.

Melbourne were accused of playing "wildly without any definite purpose".

Best were Lilley, McKenzie and Allen.
