Melbourne had a difficult trip the game, being forced to travel to Geelong by boat due to a railway strike, and they found things no easier once they got to the ground.

A strong wind blew across the ground in the first half, but even though the Reds got the first goal of the day Geelong managed to win both quarters before the breeze died down after the long break. The locals didn't run away with the game until the second half, but their teamwork was far superior even when kicking against the wind in the first term.

Geelong ran away with a big victory after Sowden was forced to pull out of the game with an ankle injury late in the third quarter. They had chances in the last term but only managed 1.3 while Geelong kicked five goals with their scoring shots.

Best were Moodie, Langley and Moriarty.
