After three seasons with West Melbourne from 1899, the defender joined Melbourne in 1903 and played three consecutive games. He moved to Carlton in 1904 and played three more. After his VFL career ended he married a New Zealander and moved to Wellington.
In 1917 he enlisted in the New Zealand Army to fight World War I. While serving with the 29th Reinforcements of the Wellington Infantry Regiment he was seriously wounded in France during October 1918. Gourlay was transferred to England but died of his injuries 10 days later, 10 days before the war ended.
